Post-Cleanse Day Two: Journal entry

IMG_20141123_111130680~2 Well, I’ve certainly learned something! Remember the five pounds I lost? Remember the burger and ale I had last night for dinner because I didn’t plan ahead for post-cleanse-friendly foods? I gained two pounds back!

Let me start off by saying, again, that this cleanse wasn’t about losing weight. It was about getting healthier. I want to make it clear that I don’t obsess about my weight. I’m perfectly content to be a size 10 or 12.

Next, let me point out the obvious: two pounds gained overnight is obviously not fat. What I ate last night somehow caused my body to retain water, or something a little stickier than that. I’m not sure exactly. I just know that this is an interesting lesson.

So …


Triumphs: I went back to a healthier way of eating today. And, even with last night’s hiccup, I still feel really good. I had a lot more energy today than I’ve had in months. I was able to help someone move, and didn’t get tired or dizzy from the exertion. And, my anxiety levels are back down.

Makeovers: I meditated this morning and watched the sun rise. I brought some healthy snacks, including carrots and hummus, to eat while we worked today, and then ate well the rest of the day.

cleanse pullquoteChallenges:  I didn’t have time to do any grocery shopping today, and I have to work tomorrow, so the challenge to eat nourishing, healthy meals continues. Part of the problem is that I’m not sure what to eat. I certainly don’t want to go back to my old habits, but being on the go like this makes it hard to eat healthy, filling meals, without spending a fortune.

Intentions: I intend that I surf the Detoxinista site for some ideas before I go to bed tonight.

Current Conditions: Jazzed, yet cautious.

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful for improved health. I’m also thankful that my challenges are first world problems. I did the cleanse because I was having health issues from not taking care of myself. So I’m not whining about having too many food choices when there are people who are literally starving. I’m deeply thankful that I have food choices to make. I’m grateful that I’m learning more, every day, about how to fuel my body in a way that makes it run like a well-oiled machine.

Cleanse Day Five: Journal entry

The final Morning Cocktail! Huzzah! Turns out, they’re not so bad. I will probably continue to make these a few times a week.


Triumphs: I finished the cleanse, without cheating once and it wasn’t very hard at all. After the first day or two, I wasn’t even very hungry. It carlton-dance-gifshows me that what I thought were hunger pangs were actually false hunger. I didn’t need food, I needed to feed a craving.

I love five pounds and I feel so much better!

Makeovers: Today, at my second day at work, I made a point of wearing the kinds of clothes that made me feel really good about myself.

Challenges: On Saturday, I work a full shift and haven’t  had time to make any arrangements for what I’m going to eat. When coming off a cleanse, it’s wise to not jump back into old habits, for two reasons: you can feel ill if you do, and why undo the good work that’s been done?cleanse pullquote

Intentions: I intend that eat some leftover quinoa for breakfast, so I’ll be full until lunch. Then I intend that I go to Sprouts (a local health food grocery store) for lunch to find something suitable.

Current Conditions: Feeling triumphant!

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that I’ve proven to myself that I can still do this (I was feeling very discouraged and depressed before I started). I’m grateful for my doctor’s recognition that I needed to do a cleanse. She was right.

Cleanse Day Four: Journal entry

No food pics today! I ate pretty much the same things I’ve been eating, and my day was too busy to experiment with anything new.


Triumphs: I started my new job today and didn’t reek of garlic. The odorless garlic tablets are as advertised. Plus, I felt better, not having ingested so much raw garlic. I didn’t realize it before, but it was the cause of my feeling mildly ill.

I’m down another pound, for a total of four.

Makeovers: I hate to admit it, but I didn’t have time for any Makeovers today. Perhaps my Makeover will be to cut myself some slack for not doing any, when it was such an unusually busy day.

Challenges: We’ve had a major Challenge crop up in my household, which I can’t really talk about here. Sometimes my reaction to such things is to say “Screw it” and eat whatever I want. It is hard to not do that, being so close to the end of this cleanse. I could easily say, “I only have one more day, I can quit early.”

Intentions: I intend that I see this through until the end. I only have one more day.

Current Conditions: Tired, ready for bed.

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that my new job has begun and that it seems like it will work out well. I’m grateful for the lightness that I’m beginning to feel as a result of this cleanse. I’m thankful that I can definitely see results in the way my body looks, and my clothes fit.

Cleanse Day Three: Journal entry

Today was a good day! I felt a little discomfort this afternoon, from eating too many of the same foods (Note to self: too many sweet potatoes can cause an acidy stomach), so I switched it up at dinner time with some new ideas.


Triumphs: I made it easily through Day Three of the cleanse. Well, maybe not easily, but I made it with flying colors. I also came up with a couple of recipes that are good enough to carry on after the cleanse is over. I made some quinoa with carmelized onions and mushrooms for dinner, and a salad with homemade dressing. I’ve never made my own dressing before, and it was really good.

IMG_20141119_144054288Also, my doc said that I can skip the raw garlic in the Morning Cocktail and, instead, take an odorless garlic supplement.

Lastly, I lost another pound, for a total for three so far.

Makeovers: I did several loads of laundry today and changed the sheets. And, some of the cooking I did today counts as a Makeover. I don’t like to cook, so any time I can create something yummy in the kitchen, it’s a Triumph/Makeover.

Challenges: Tomorrow is my first day at my new job. Aside from being nervous, I also have to figure out a way to eat cleanse-friendly foods while I’m there. (But at least I won’t reek of garlic.)

IMG_20141119_185315583Intentions: I intend that I spend some time tomorrow putting together a variety of things to eat. I intend that I do not procrastinate this important task.

Current Conditions: Happy to be more than halfway done.

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that the Big U seems to be on my side in this effort. I’m grateful that I don’t have to ingest raw garlic anymore. I’m thankful that Jeff is being cool about making his own cleanse pullquotemeals, and that he’s not making many of my favorite (trigger) foods. I’m grateful that I was able to give the grandkids some Oreos today, and wasn’t even tempted.

Cleanse Day Two: Journal entry

Today is Tuesday, the second day of the detox/cleanse process. So far so good, but I’m really glad it’s only five days long.


Triumphs: Made it through a rough patch today. It’s only Day Two of the cleanse and I had a few moments of “I don’t wanna do this anymore”–I was craving something substantial, like bread or pasta, but didn’t cave.

And, I lost two pounds already!!! I can already see a difference in my abdomen, and I feel a lot better.

Makeovers: I went to the store and picked up some more flavorful foods than I had originally stocked up on. I got some grapes, pears and a cleanse pullquotecucumber, which I then used to make my favorite cucumber salad (rice vinegar, sesame oil and a little xylitol).

Challenges: The Morning Cocktail takes a half hour to make. Holy crap! It’s a lot of work! I was thinking about doing the prep work in advance, but then read that the ingredients should be used fresh. And, the garlic smell hangs around. Not real thrilled with that. It’s okay as long as I’m not out in public, but I have to work Thursday and Friday.

Intentions: I intend that I make the extra effort to take care of myself for three more days. Also, I intend that I research how important the garlic is (I think it’s pretty important). If it’s not, I’ll skip it the days I have to work. If it is important, I intend that I get some unscented garlic supplements to take instead.

Current Conditions: Feeling energized, a little hungry, a little cranky.

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that I worked at home today. I’m grateful that Day Two went by quickly enough and I feel positive effects.

Cleanse Day One: Journal entry

Today’s menu included the Morning Cocktail for breakfast, a sweet potato for lunch, cabbage soup and quinoa for dinner, and a cup of peach tea. I’m not terribly hungry. Here is my full journal entry.


 

IMG_20141117_090913124Triumphs: I started strong today on the cleanse. I learned some valuable things about making the Morning Cocktail, and that sweet potatoes taste great with pumpkin pie spices (I love sweet potatoes swimming in butter, and wasn’t sure if I’d like them without it).

Makeovers: I made a great big pot of soup. I also went to Emma Porter’s Chakradance event this morning.

Challenges: I can see how hunger may become an issue as the week goes on. I’m hungry now, but not uncomfortably so. The Challenge is that the kinds of foods I’m supposed to eat on this cleanse ALL require preparation, and the kitchen is not my favorite room.

Current Conditions: Feeling surprisingly good. I thought I might feel headachy or fuzzy, but I’m doing well.

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that today went smoothly. I’m thankful that I’m enjoying this first day of the cleanse. I’m grateful that I was able to find the foods I need at affordable prices. I’m thankful that cleanse pullquotethe price of organic food is coming down.

Cleanse Day One and the Morning Cocktail

Today is Day One of the cleanse, and I already have learned a few things about the Morning Cocktail to make the rest of the week run more smoothly:

The Liver Flush Daily Detox recipe:

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil – anywhere from 2 Tbsp. to 1/3 cup, as you prefer
  • Freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, 1/3 cup
  • Fresh garlic, 3-5 cloves
  • Fresh ginger, 1/2″
  • Cayenne Pepper, dash to taste
  • Freshly squeezed orange juice, 2 cups

Put all ingredients in a blender, blend and drink immediately.

  1. I didn’t allow enough time to do this properly before heading out the door to start my day. I need to either do the prep work in advance, or allow more time.
  2. That prep work includes dicing the ginger and garlic cloves. I threw them in whole. They didn’t break down in the blender very well, so I was left with chunks that got wasted and poured down the disposal. And, squeezing the juice takes some time, so doing that in advance would be helpful.
  3. The recipe calls for 1/3 cup of lemon or lime juice. That was about 1.5 lemons.
  4. It calls for 2 cups of orange juice. That was about four oranges.
  5. Unless you don’t mind pulpy drinks, it could use a good straining or a lot more blending than I allowed.

It actually tastes pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised. But I was concerned about smelling of garlic at my first appointment this morning. That smell  has faded.

I’ve decided to make a big ol’ pot of cabbage soup (from the infamous Cabbage Soup Diet) because it’s not bad soup and it fits in with the rest of cleanse pullquotethe cleanse’s guidelines. I’m not doing this cleanse to lose weight, but if I did that would be a nice bonus. I’m not going to link to a recipe because there are so many out there. Just Google it and find the one that appeals to you.

I’m also going to be eating lots of steamed broccoli and sweet potatoes, which are two of my faves, along with quinoa made with vegetable broth.

For now, though, I’ve only done the Morning Cocktail. I still have to make the soup. I’ll  let you know how it turns out.

Cleanse-prep: Procrastination City!

I don’t want to do this cleanse. It’s so much easier to keep eating like I have been, and not have to shop for all of the special ingredients, and spend all that money, and eat separate meals–not to mention the actual preparation and consumption of said “meals”, which are all going to be green or liquid and not even close to chocolate-flavored.


That said, here’s my first Journal entry (see this blog for an explanation of the format):

Triumphs: I made my shopping list for five days of the “morning cocktail”. I’m going to buy organic whenever possible.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Lemons and/or limes, for juicing, enough for 1/3 cup per day
  • Fresh garlic, 15-25 cloves
  • Fresh ginger, 2.5″
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Oranges for juicing, enough for 2 cups per day

This is a Triumph because I’ve been putting this off for long enough, and I’ve finally stopped procrastinating.

Makeovers: That Triumph counts as a Makeover, too, because it’s something that I’ve done to feel better about myself. Aside from that, I finally colored my hair this morning, and got some stretching exercises in. It felt good, but crunchy, to move a little.

Challenges: This could get expensive. I have to buy a lot of specialty foods, on top of my regular grocery shopping, since I’m the only one in my house to be doing the cleanse. Money is a little tight, so this is going cleanse pullquoteto take some fancy footwork.

Intentions: I intend that I actually look at the Sprouts ad when it comes in the mail this week (I usually just throw it away with the mountain of other ads it comes buried in), and shop their sales. They usually have really good produce prices. Between them, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, I should be able to pull this off. Then, I intend that I shop for everything I need later this week.

Current Conditions: Feeling a little better, now that I’ve done this much. Well begun is halfway done, right?

Daily Thanksgiving: I’m thankful that my doctor was able to see that I needed her to push me into this. I probably wouldn’t have done it on my own–at least, not until after the holidays, and I probably would be several pounds heavier by then. I’m grateful that I finally live near the kinds of stores I need to pull this off (for many, many years I did not).

Cleanse-prep journal format

In one week from today, I’ll be starting a doctor-ordered cleanse. It’s mostly fruits and vegetables, with some quinoa for protein. I’ll use this blog to introduce the format I’ll be using for my cleanse journal.


After a crazy weekend, I’m finally able to sit down today and begin planning for next week. I’ll post the cleanse instructions as soon as I can give the proper credit to its creator. I don’t know if it’s something my doctor came up with, or if she got it from elsewhere. So, when I know that, I’ll post the instructions. Hopefully that will be later today.

The instructions, below, are given in a slightly different order, because it’s easier to explain this way:

Challenges are the circumstances that keep you from your preferred state. Challenges are the only component to be worded as possibly negative because we immediately flip them over and reword them as …

Intentions, which are Challenges reframed to make a positive statement. Once you recognize a Challenge, you now know what you intend to overcome. Find a positive way to reword your Challenge and start the sentence with “I intend that I AM …”, stating it in the present tense. The creative Force into which we speak takes our words—and how we feel about them—very literally.

Triumphs are signs that forward movement is happening. They don’t have to be “Mission Accomplished.” They can be the smallest indication carlton-dance-gifthat something has improved. Shining light upon them helps them to grow. And it’s always fun to do a happy dance.

Makeovers are the things you do to look or feel better about yourself. They can be as simple as wearing your favorite shirt to work—the one you save for special occasions—or showering with your “expensive” soap. They can also be energy clearing actions like cleaning your closets, changing your sheets or smudging your house with sage. Changing the Feng Shui of your home is an extremely powerful Makeover. They don’t have to cost anything, but they should make you feel like you’ve cleared some stagnant energy.

To use a gardening analogy:

  • Stating your Challenges is the same as tilling the rocky soil.
  • Setting your Intentions is planting high-quality seeds.
  • Recognizing your Triumphs is spotting and caring for the tiny sprouts as they poke through the earth.
  • Makeovers are the fertilizer that makes your soil rich.

Daily Thanksgivings are daily ways of checking in and appreciating what’s already good in your life. Think of it as a mini “Rampage of Appreciation,” for you Abe fans.cleanse pullquote

Money and Weight Loss: Are they connected?

For me, the answer is yes. Or, at least, it was. Last year I wrote a blog called “Does lack of money keep you fat?” because I was having a difficult time rationalizing spending extra money on the kinds of foods I felt that I needed, in order to get healthy and lose weight.

After all, we had one food budget for two people. To buy completely different foods for just me would mean over-extending the budget. And to ask my husband to change to the way I want to eat didn’t seem fair.

Never mind that his assuming that I should eat what he wants is equally unfair, but possession is 9/10ths of the law, right? His way of eating had possessed our kitchen for over twenty years, so it felt unreasonable of me to expect him to change just because what works for him doesn’t work for me. So I suffered in relative silence and got fatter and fatter.

Finally, after posting that blog, I did something about it. I pretty much just insisted and, to my surprise, he didn’t put up as much of a fight as I expected. And we’ve discovered that my eating my way and his eating his way really doesn’t cost much different, once we settled into a shopping and cooking routine. Now I’m 35 pounds lighter and he didn’t have to give up eating garbage.
